Small Kittens, Small Steps

Sometimes I like to explain counselling by comparing it to fostering kittens.

Kittens and Counselling

When tiny foster kittens come into a home, they need consistency. They need regular feeding, comfort, play, routines, and connection. We wouldn’t just check on them once a month and expect them to feel safe, confident, and thriving.

Emotional growth often works similarly.

Why Consistency Helps

Families sometimes ask about recommendations for frequency. Although every family and situation is unique, I often recommend weekly or biweekly sessions instead of monthly sessions.

The answer is not that one schedule fits every child — it absolutely depends on the child, family, goals, and season of life. Monthly sessions can still be very helpful for some children. But often, especially when children are working on emotional regulation, anxiety, behaviour, relationships, or coping skills, consistency helps create momentum.

Regular sessions allow us to:

  • Build on skills from previous sessions

  • Strengthen trust and connection

  • Practice strategies more consistently

  • Support regulation before challenges become overwhelming

  • Keep progress moving forward

Between-Session Magic

Therapy is not just about what happens during the counselling session itself.

Growth also happens in everyday moments:

  • Practicing coping skills at home

  • Trying new ways of responding

  • Repairing after difficult moments

  • Building routines and connection

Caregivers are one of the most important parts of helping emotional growth continue between sessions. Caregiver Support Sessions can help caregivers respond confidently to a child's big feelings, support the practice of coping skills, repair a rupture after hard moments, and create predictable connection, which can make a huge difference over time.

Children’s brains learn through repetition and repeated experiences over time.

Just like kittens slowly learn safety through consistent care, children often build emotional skills through regular support, connection, and practice.

Little Moments Matter

One of the sweetest parts of fostering kittens is watching tiny changes happen over time — a nervous kitten becoming playful, curious, and confident little by little.

Counselling can feel like that too.

Sometimes growth happens quietly through many small repeated moments of care, support, patience, and connection. And over time, those tiny moments can create really meaningful change.
